Common Excuses for Not Evangelising
As a Christian doing ‘the work of an evangelist’ 2 Tim 4:5, I am shocked at the statements made by fellow “Christians” regarding evangelism. It would seem that what the Word of God has to say on the matter, comes a long way second, to what the latest book has to say. What “I think” and “I feel” certainly carries more weight to the average Christian, than what the Holy Word of God has to say.
When considering winning the lost to Christ, we must, as with every area of our lives come back to what the Word of God has to say. We must make It’s Truth our Final Authority. We must allow the light of the Word of God to direct every area of our lives.
Below is the first of a long list of common excuses we hear on a regular basis from “Christians” as to why they do not need to evangelize - and direct responses from the Word of God
1. I’m not called to evangelism, that’s the work of the “evangelist”.
Mar 1:8 I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.
Act 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
In Mark 1:8 we see Jesus intended for all His believers to be baptized in the Holy Ghost. Acts 1:8 shows us the primary outworking of that baptism – to be witnesses unto Jesus, everywhere. Jesus commanded that all His followers were to bear witness to Him and preach His gospel to every creature. He did not say only a select few should do this job, but rather that every person who claims to be a follower of His, should first and foremost be a witness of Him and for Him.
Mat 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
Mat 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
Mat 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Mar 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
Whether you are appointed as a five fold ministry evangelist or not, the Bible clearly teaches every believer is to do the work of an evangelist and witness to the lost.
2. I need a “rhema” word from God. I wait on the unction of the Holy Ghost and He has not told me to go
2Pe 1:16 For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
2Pe 1:17 For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
2Pe 1:18 And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.
2Pe 1:19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
2Pe 1:20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scriptureis of any private interpretation.
2Pe 1:21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
God does not need to give you a “word” regarding something He has already specified in His ‘more sure Word’ – the Holy Scriptures. Peter who had walked and talked with Jesus and was present when the audible voice of God the Father was heard, still said he had a ‘more sure word of prophecy’ in the written Word of God. We are not to seek a “word” of confirmation regarding something God has already clearly clarified and directed in His written Word.
In 2 Peter 1:21 we see that the Holy Ghost is the author of the very verses commanding us to go and preach that we read above. The “unction” that you are foolishly waiting on, has already come to ‘holy men of God… as they were moved by the Holy Ghost”.Stop waiting. God has clearly spoken. Start obeying.
3. I don’t have a love for the lost, so if I go out there it’ll be out of a wrong heart.
If this is your problem, you need to get saved.
Rom 5:5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
1Co 6:17 But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.
If you are born again, you have God’s heart and Spirit now. His love has been shed abroad in your heart by the Holy Ghost. To say you have no love for the lost in your heart is to admit that you are unsaved according to scripture.
When most people say that, they are meaning they don’t “feel” any love for the lost. To this the Word of God says ‘the just shall live by faith’ Romans 1:17. The Word of God tells us we’re filled with His love and that we are to go and preach the gospel to the lost. So we ‘the just’ don’t live by feelings, but rather we believe the Word and we go and do it, regardless of how we are ‘feeling’.
4. I’d just be evangelizing out of a works mentality, so I’ll wait until I’m doing it out of pure love for Jesus.
Joh 14:21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
Joh 14:23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
Joh 14:24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.
To obey Jesus is not a “works mentality” but a “love mentality”. The Word of God clearly teaches us that to love Jesus is to obey Him. So if you want to live out of “pure love for Jesus”, then do what He’s told you to do – stop making excuses and go and witness to the lost.
What is commonly understood as a “works mentality” – is the attitude that I must work to earn my salvation or to earn God pleasure. The Word of God makes it clear that faith and obedience are what pleases God (Heb 11:6 & 1 Sam 15:22). So the person who believes God’s Word regarding evangelism and obeys it is demonstrating the purest form of love for Jesus, rather than any kind of “works mentality”.
5. I feel pressured to evangelise and pressure is not from God, so I wont go
Mat 9:37 Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few;
Mat 9:38 Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourersinto his harvest.
Mat 10:1 And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.
If you are feeling “pressured” to evangelise, you can be sure it is God!
If you look at 9:38 and 10:1 above, Jesus says to pray that the Lord will “send forth” labourers into His harvest and later He gave His disciples power against devils to “cast them out”. In the Greek the word used to describe both actions is the same.
G1544 ἐκβάλλω, ekballō, ek-bal'-lo:
From G1537 and G906; to eject (literally or figuratively): - bring forth, cast (forth, out), drive (out), expel, leave, pluck (pull, take, thrust) out, put forth (out), send away (forth, out).
God is forceful when it comes to sending His people out to get the lost.
6. I’m afraid.
Then you need to repent.
There are 63 verses in the Bible that specifically tell you to “fear not”.
Phi 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
Phi 4:7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Joh 14:1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
Are you born again?
2Ti 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
7. Preaching the gospel puts people off rather than drawing them to Christ, it does more harm than good.
1Co 1:18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
Rom 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
Mat 10:7 And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.
Mar 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
Preaching is God’s way, do you think you know a better way than God?
Isa 55:8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.
Isa 55:9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
Isa 55:10 For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater:
Isa 55:11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
8. People hate street preachers
We’re in good company then…
Joh 15:18 If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.
Joh 15:19 If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.
Joh 15:20 Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.
Joh 15:21 But all these things will they do unto you for my name's sake, because they know not him that sent me.
1Jo 3:13 Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.
Mat 10:22 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.
9. I don’t know how
You’ve got the One Who does. The Great Witness lives on the inside of every born again Spirit filled believer. Trust in Him and be obedient.
Act 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
10. That form of evangelism won't work among the people we’re working with
The Gospel always works – see point 7 .
11. Remember some great saint said “preach at every opportunity, use words if necessary”
Why quote a man, when you can quote The Man. Certainly, if that man’s quotes contradicts The Man’s quotes, then we must reject his quote as heresy!
Jesus said;
Mat 10:7 And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.
Mar 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
Jesus said it was the preaching of this very gospel that would be the power by which all men might be saved.
So no matter what any other man has said Rom 3:4 ‘God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar’
Of course the Bible does also command us to live what we preach
1Jo 3:18 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.
We are certainly to preach through our love and actions, but this coincides with and does not negate the rest of scripture telling us to preach the gospel verbally.
12. We can win them to Christ more effectively through our compassion and mercy, our acts of charity and kindness and “friendship evangelism”
Rom 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
It is the Gospel of Christ, not acts of compassion and kindness, that is ‘the power of God unto salvation’. You can keep people warm and full all their way to hell – but it is the Gospel alone that has the power to save their souls.
We are commanded to love people and minister to them in deed and truth, AND in truly loving them we MUST preach the Gospel of their salvation to them.
True “friendship evangelism” would be to – actually be a friend and evangelize to them.
You are no more a friend to an unsaved person without preaching the gospel to them – than a doctor who knows the cure to a patients cancer, but chooses to feed and clothe them, rather than delivering the cure to them.
They wont be able to enjoy food and warmth for long when they’re DEAD!
So also, to truly love someone and be a true friend, we must give them the cure to their sin – salvation through the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.
13. What about persecution?
Glory!!!
Mat 5:10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Mat 5:11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
Mat 5:12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.
1Pe 4:13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.
1Pe 4:14 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.
14. But is it God’s will to save these people? Remember He has predestined and elected the few
Mat 18:14 Even so it is not the will of your Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish.
Joh 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only-begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
2Pe 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
So, I’m sure you’ve figured out by now the Bible’s response to the title statement… Christian’s are not evangelizing today because they are failing to be true Christians. The word “Christian” is literally translated “follower of Christ” and the Bible clearly tells us in John 1:1 and Revelation 19:13 that Jesus Christ is the Word of God. Thus to be a Christian necessarily implies that you are a follower of His Word.
Sadly many of today’s “Christians” are not true biblical Christians at all. They have moved away from the true Word of God and instead of upholding His Word, have been ‘teaching for doctrines the commandments of men’ Matthew 15:9.
Today, come back to the Word of God, repent of your unscriptural excuses and let’s get this world saved In Jesus Name!
When considering winning the lost to Christ, we must, as with every area of our lives come back to what the Word of God has to say. We must make It’s Truth our Final Authority. We must allow the light of the Word of God to direct every area of our lives.
